Opening of the new Pantanal at the Zürich Zoo

Zürich ZooAnteaters, tapirs, flamingos and capybaras have found a new home at the Zürich Zoo. Winding paths, a walkable island and a variety of plants adorn the Pantanal.

After the festive inauguration of the Masoala Rainforest almost ten years ago, and after the opening of the lions’ enclosure in 2006, the Zürich Zoo has reached another milestone in its development into a Nature Center with the South American Pantanal.
The new facility shows a section of the South American wet and dry biotope, that is among the richest habitats, given the variety of species. On the 9000-square-meter facility, tapirs, anteaters, capybaras, flamingos, tschajas, yellow-breasted capuchin monkeys, squirrel monkeys, Köhler turtles and macaws will find in Zürich a natural habitat that is modeled after their country of origin.
Just like in the Masoala Rainforest, some of the animals move freely in the Pantanal. The 230-square-meter monkey-island in the center of the facility can be walked and enables visitors to come into direct contact with the lively squirrel monkeys. Visitors to the zoo can observe swimming tapirs and diving capybaras. And at the police station one can find out many interesting facts about illegal animal trade.

Hoffenheim swoop for Wiese and Derdiyok

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim have beaten off fierce competition to secure the signings of German international goalkeeper Tim Wiese from SV Werder Bremen and Switzerland striker Eren Derdiyok from Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
Wiese will join from Bremen this summer on a free transfer when his contract at the Weserstadion expires. The 30-year-old, who is likely to be part of Germany’s UEFA EURO 2012 squad, has agreed a deal keeping him at Hoffenheim until June 2016. The former SC Fortuna Koln and 1. FC Kaiserslautern goalkeeper had been at Bremen since 2005, winning the German Cup and finishing runner-up in the UEFA Cup and twice in the Bundesliga.
Coach Markus Babbel said: “We didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to sign such an experienced, successful and ambitious professional, and we’re all delighted things have worked out. Tim Wiese has managed to break into the national team; that says it all about how good he is. I have no doubt that he will be a key factor in this club achieving its goals.”
Hoffenheim acquired Swiss international Derdiyok, 23, from Leverkusen for an undisclosed fee. Like Wiese, he has signed a four-year contract and Babbel said: “Eren Derdiyok is a complete striker. He fits the mould perfectly regarding the type of player we want at this club. I’m pleased we were able to convince him to join.” Derdiyok moved to Germany from FC Basel 1893 in 2009 and has scored 25 goals in 89 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen.

Hodgson ‘proud’ to lead England at EURO 2012

England will go into UEFA EURO 2012 with Roy Hodgson as their manager after the Football Association (FA) confirmed his appointment on a four-year contract.
Hodgson replaces Fabio Capello, who quit the role in February, and will have just two friendly matches – against Norway in Oslo on 26 May, and Belgium at Wembley on 2 June – before England embark on their EURO campaign against France in Donetsk on 11 June.
“Roy emerged as our stand-out candidate,” said David Bernstein, the chairman of the FA, at the press conference to unveil England’s new appointment. “We quickly agreed Roy is the right man to guide us through the European Championships and future tournaments.
“We were unanimous in choosing Roy, a manager with vast experience of international and European football. This is the first time the FA has appointed an England manager with any previous international experience. This, I’m sure, will be of great benefit in helping him make the adjustments from club management.”
Hodgson described feelings of great pride at taking the job he regards to be “the pinnacle” of football management. “It’s a very proud day for me,” he said. “I’m a very happy man to have been offered the chance to manage my country. I’m looking forward enormously to the task ahead; everyone knows it’s not an easy one but I also think that everybody – the fans – will get behind the team because it’s the team that counts, and it’s the team that will win us matches.”
Hodgson added that he was aiming to guide England to victory at UEFA EURO 2012 and that the announcement of his provisional squad for the tournament would be put back until the end of the season in order for him to do “as much research” and “speak to as many players as possible”. The 64-year-old has also agreed to see out West Bromwich Albion FC’s final two Premier League matches of the campaign – against Bolton Wanderers FC and Arsenal FC – before focusing on the matter of steering England to glory in Poland and Ukraine.
“England have always got to go into a tournament with the aim of winning it because we’re a major footballing nation. It will be difficult because I’ve come in at a rather late stage, but I think the players would be disappointed if I tried to do anything less.”
The FA announced on Sunday that it had made an approach to West Brom to speak to Hodgson, who had been manager at The Hawthorns since February last year and whose contract with the club ends this summer.
England have been without a manager since the resignation of Capello. Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce held the reins for the 3-2 home friendly defeat by the Netherlands at the end of February.
Hodgson has previous experience of international football with Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and Finland and as coach of the Swiss ended their 28-year absence from major tournaments when steering them to the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where they reached the last 16. He also led Switzerland to EURO ’96 qualification but moved on to FC Internazionale Milano before the finals.
In an interview with UEFA.com last year, Hodgson reflected on the different challenge of international management when he said: “The major difference for me was the nature of the work and what it demanded from me. You get more preparation time, which is good. I always felt that I was able to go in and really talk with some expertise on the opponents, because I had the chance to follow them and study them and prepare the videos.”
Known as a hands-on coach on the training ground, Hodgson also voiced his awareness of one of the potential perils of the job. “There’s a risk with being a national coach, that after periods of inactivity you try to do too much in a short period of time,” he said.
“You also forget that the players come from a day-to-day environment, they come to you maybe a little bit tired from their club training sessions, and you are trying to get the maximum and demanding a lot from them in your training sessions; it can be a dangerous job for people like myself who like to be out on the field coaching the players.”
Hodgson will face these challenges and more in his new role, but can draw on almost four decades of experience from a coaching career which began with Swedish club Halmstad BK in the mid-1970s.
Since then Hodgson has managed clubs in five other countries – Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Norway and, of course, England. He returned to his homeland in 2007 to take charge of Fulham FC and led them to the UEFA Europa League final in 2010, just as he had done with Inter in the 1997 UEFA Cup, before a short-lived spell as Liverpool FC manager.

Young Boys part ways with Gross

BSC Young Boys have dismissed coach Christian Gross in the wake of the club’s 2-1 loss at Servette FC on Saturday.
Appointed last summer with a view to turning Young Boys into championship contenders, the 57-year-old’s departure came after FC Basel 1893 secured the Swiss title on Sunday. The Berne-based Young Boys lie third in the standings, 25 points behind Basel and seven shy of second-placed FC Luzern.
“I started the job with a lot of enthusiasm last year, but I knew it would be difficult,” said the former Basel, Tottenham Hotspur FC and VfB Stuttgart coach. “I am massively disappointed.”
Youth coordinator Erminio Piserchia will take over in a caretaker capacity between now and the end of the season, with former player Thomas Haberli serving as his assistant.

Montpellier make gains, Madrid eye finishing line

Montpellier Herault SC moved a step nearer to their maiden Ligue 1 crown after a loss for rivals Paris Saint-Germain FC left the capital side five points adrift at the summit, while Real Madrid CF and Juventus both clinched wins that brought their own title dreams closer. The suspense is over in a number of other leagues, meanwhile, with FC Zenit St Petersburg taking the honours in Russia and FC Porto settling matters in Portugal. UEFA.com recaps the action.
France

Montpellier beat Toulouse FC 1-0 on Friday night to pile pressure on PSG to respond in kind against reigning champions LOSC Lille Metropole. However, a dramatic turnaround inspired by substitute Nolan Roux earned Lille a 2-1 win against ten-man PSG, leaving Carlo Ancelotti’s charges five points shy of Montpellier and cutting their lead over Lille to just two points with four games remaining. “It has become very complicated,” admitted Ancelotti. “The championship is not over; we will give a strong and immediate response.” The French Cup is done and dusted, on the other hand, after Lisandro earned Olympique Lyonnais a 1-0 win against third-tier US Quevilly in the final.
Italy

Juventus retained their three-point lead at the Serie A summit as Mirko Vucinic struck twice in their rousing 4-0 defeat of Novara Calcio. The Bianconeri will be crowned champions if they win their next two games against US Lecce and Cagliari Calcio, but coach Antonio Conte warned against complacency. “Dangers can only come from ourselves now,” said the 42-year-old. “Therefore, in our next fixtures we’re required to get on the pitch with the right attitude, like we did today.” AC Milan remain on their trail after a comfortable 4-1 victory at AC Siena, while the race for the last UEFA Champions League spot remains wide open, with four teams tied on 55 points.
Spain

FC Barcelona responded in scintillating fashion to the most exacting of weeks as they inflicted a 7-0 home loss on Rayo Vallecano de Madrid, but it was not enough to put any sort of dent into Madrid’s Liga lead. Karim Benzema scored twice as Jose Mourinho’s men beat Sevilla FC 3-0 to stay seven points clear with three games to go. “We didn’t celebrate because we still need three points to win the title,” said Benzema. “Winning the Spanish league would be a dream come true for me.” Meanwhile, Malaga CF beat Valencia CF 1-0 to move level with their third-placed opponents on 55 points.
England

Tottenham Hotspur FC moved into fourth position on goal difference ahead of Newcastle United FC after a 2-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers FC at White Hart Lane, a win that leaves Spurs four points behind North London rivals Arsenal FC with a game in hand. “We’ve just got to keep trying to win the games,” said Spurs boss Harry Redknapp, “and if we do, no one can finish above us. We’ve got a much better goal average than Newcastle. Chelsea are looking very dangerous, they’re in fantastic form, but we’ll see how we go.” Newcastle fell to a 4-0 defeat at Wigan Athletic FC, while Chelsea FC’s 6-1 win against Queens Park Rangers FC leaves them one point behind the Magpies in sixth.
Germany

FC Schalke 04 will compete in the UEFA Champions League group stage next season after wrapping up third spot in the Bundesliga with a 4-0 win against Hertha BSC Berlin, Raul Gonzalez finding the net in his last home game with the Royal Blues. “I scored in my last match and watching the love of the fans during these two years has been very special,” said the Spanish striker. “I have no words to describe it.” Crowned last weekend, champions Borussia Dortmund also triumphed, beating 1. FC Kaiserslautern 5-2, while UEFA Champions League finalists FC Bayern Munchen overcame VfB Stuttgart 2-0 and VfL Borussia Monchengladbach drew 0-0 with FC Augsburg.
Elsewhere

There were celebrations across the continent as title and cup issues were resolved this weekend, not least in Russia, where Zenit successfully defended the championship crown they won last season. There was joy in Portugal too, where FC Porto settled matters, while Basel won their third successive Swiss title, Avram Grant’s FK Partizan took the honours in Serbia, Valletta FC prevailed in Malta and Neftci PFK collected their seventh Azerbaijani crown. On the knockout front, Olympiacos FC lifted the Greek Cup for the 25th time and FC Shirak clinched the Armenian Cup.

Wilde and Al-Ionai prove most prolific

Not only did Brazilian pivot Wilde add one of the few remaining honours missing from his career by helping hosts FC Barcelona to UEFA Futsal Cup victory, he ended as finals top scorer in Lleida.
Having struck twice in the 5-1 last-four defeat of Sporting Clube de Portugal, Wilde smashed in an early goal as Barcelona won 3-1 in the final against MFK Dinamo Moskva, leaving him as the only player on three goals in the showpiece event. Wilde had previously lost the 2008 final on penalties with ElPozo Murcia FS against another Russian team, MFK Sinara Ekaterinburg.
Top scorer for the season as a whole was Romanian international Ion Al-Ioani, who aided Hungary’s Gyori ETO FC from the preliminary round to the elite round with 13 goals – including one in the 3-1 loss to Sporting that ended their hopes, though he drew a blank in an 8-2 main round defeat by FC Barcelona. Gyor were also the most prolific team overall with 54 goals in nine games.
The record for a single campaign remains 19 by Andre Vanderlei for Action 21 Charleroi in 2003/04. He is also the only player to have top-scored in two different seasons and, having returned to the competition this term with Chatelineau Futsal, Andre became the first man to reach 50 career goals in the UEFA Futsal Cup when he struck against Akademia FC Pniewy in the main round in September.

Basel crowned champions of Switzerland

FC Basel 1893 have retained their league crown for a third successive year after a routine 3-1 victory against FC Lausanne-Sport.
The result took Basel an insurmountable 18 points clear of second-placed FC Luzern and ensured that they became the first Swiss club to clinch the title as early as April. Marco Streller, Alexander Frei and Jacques Zoua were all on target as delirium ensued inside a packed St. Jakob-Park. A domestic double is now in sight, with Heiko Vogel’s side set to face Luzern in the Swiss Cup final on 16 May.
Despite the loss of coach Thorsten Fink to Hamburger SV in October, Basel have embarked upon a sensational run, boasting an unbeaten league sequence stretching back to August. During that time, the 15-time Swiss champions also knocked Manchester United FC out of the UEFA Champions League, and had FC Bayern Munchen on the ropes in the first leg of their round of 16 tie.
“It is difficult to describe my emotions, but I’m extremely happy,” said Vogel. “It is similar to the 2-1 victory over Manchester United in the Champions League. I have goose bumps everywhere. To work with these guys is truly special, and no one can take that away from me.”
Club captain Marco Streller was also delighted with his team’s progress. “Last summer there was talk of what could be the most thrilling Swiss season ever,” he said. “Then we started poorly, but now we have won the title with five matches to go; that’s outstanding. We have worked incredibly hard for these moments.”
